What should a lineman do before starting work on a power line?

Before starting work on a power line, it is crucial for a lineman to de-energize the line and lock it out/tag it out. This safety procedure is fundamental in preventing electrical shock or accidental energization while work is being performed. Lockout/tagout (LOTO) is a critical process that ensures an equipment is properly shut off and not able to be started up again until maintenance or repairs are complete.

This practice involves placing a physical lock on the power source and using a tag to notify personnel that the circuit is out of service. It protects not only the lineman working on the line but also any other personnel who may be nearby. By prioritizing the de-energizing and securing of the line, a lineman significantly reduces the risk of accidents, such as electrical injuries or fatalities.
